This film was probably made as a vehicle for showing some of Australia's beautiful scenery on a low-budget. The scenery is certainly stunning. Jenny Agutter plays an English schoolgirl who, along with her much younger brother, become stranded in the Australian outback, when their Father commits suicide, after driving them out of the city. The children meet up with a native (Aboriginal) Australian teenager, who is on his "walkabout" and is surviving on his own wits and hunting skills in the outback. The "walkabout" is a survival exercise, which he has to endure during his transition from boyhood to manhood. The English children cannot speak his language and he cannot speak English. Some of the details of the plot were not very believable, which spoiled the film a little. The Australian teams up with the children, who go on the "walkabout" with him. He feeds them as they travel together to find their way back to modern civilisation. On their travels, they find a water pool, where Jenny, her brother and the Australian all swim naked (see the DVD cover picture) and the film director inserts some peculiar, brutal hunting action, between the serene scenes of Jenny's naked swimming. Near to the end of the film, the Australian does a native mating dance, to show Jenny that he has fallen in love with her, but she rejects his advances, leading to an unexpected ending. I found the film interesting and unlike any other films which I have seen. I did enjoy the film but would not enjoy watching a lot of similar films if lots more were to be made. I have liked Jenny Agutter since I was a child myself and I have never seen this film, either broadcast, or in the cinema, which was the reason that I bought it.Read full review
At times a bit over the top, but, taking into account it’s a 1971 (!) movie it’s a stunning piece of art with the photography to match. Clearly this movie is spired many.

A spellbinding, atmospheric journey, gifted from a great film director, who has combined with the talents of a fine musical composer, to give a visual and acoustic delight of a film, which should never be missed.
