About this product

Product Information

"The war in Vietnam was not lost in the field, nor was it lost on the front pages of the New York Times or the college campuses. It was lost in Washington, D.C." --H. R. McMaster (from the Conclusion) Dereliction Of Duty is a stunning analysis of how and why the United States became involved in an all-out and disastrous war in Southeast Asia. Fully and convincingly researched, based on transcripts and personal accounts of crucial meetings, confrontations and decisions, it is the only book that fully re-creates what happened and why. McMaster pinpoints the policies and decisions that got the United States into the morass and reveals who made these decisions and the motives behind them, disproving the published theories of other historians and excuses of the participants. A page-turning narrative, Dereliction Of Duty focuses on a fascinating cast of characters: President Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, General Maxwell Taylor, McGeorge Bundy and other top aides who deliberately deceived the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the U.S. Congress and the American public. McMaster's only book, Dereliction of Duty is an explosive and authoritative new look at the controversy concerning the United States involvement in Vietnam.

[[BOOK WAS THOUGHTFULLY PACKAGED - a definite plus for book lovers and collectors]] . Was delighted to see my book wedged between 2 stiff card-boards and shrink wrapped! This protected my book from rough handling during shipping that can create unsightly dents at the spine and the edges. Clearly, the seller took thoughtful and diligent steps to ensure that the parcel can withstand the ravages of shipping and can keep the book in pristine condition! i am grateful to the person who packed my order

  • Where is HK? No mention of Secretary of State?

How can any report of American involvement in Vietnam not contain even one reference to HK? Actually, because of this I did not read the book at all; I feel the author may have had 3 fingers pointing back at himself by using that title.

  • "Dereliction of Duty" then and now

This book should be required reading for every Member of the US Congress, every Judge and Justice sitting on a US Court, and every member of the Executive Branch of the US Government from the President of the US to the cadets and students being trained to be our future military and national leaders. The dereliction of duty ascribed to President Johnson, Secretary McNamara and General Maxwell Taylor as our country became embroiled in the war in Vietnam could be considered criminal tantamount to treason. A similar pattern seems to be repeating itself now in September and October 2009. We need transparency without compromising national security, and we need accountability among all branches of our government. The lessons to be learned from McMaster's book "Dereliction of Duty" may help us ...
