Karl Denson's Tiny Universe-"The Bridge" CD
Karl Denson is one of those musicians who defies categorization. This multi-talented gentleman (plays the sax, flute and sings) is best known for his work in the group, The Greyboy Allstars, and for being the musical director for Lenny Kravitz in the early 1990s. He has recorded straight jazz albums (see Chunky Pecan Pie), modern jazz albums (Dance Lessons #2) and recently, with his trio, an album (Lunar Orbit)that combines modern jazz, contemporary jazz, and acid jazz. The Bridge is one of my favorite CD's. I features Karl at his best-as an instrumentalist and a vocalist. His band, The Tiny Universe, has only ever recorded one CD. Track 2, Beacuse of her Beauty, is a beautiful, soulful, and at times funky little tune. Track 6, Check Out Your Mind, is a remake of an old Curtis Mayfield ... Track 8, The Bridge, the title cut, features great vocals and horn work, and is my favorite track. This CD features a modern jazz list of Allstars, including Brian Jordan on guitar, Zak Najor on drums (Greyboy Allstars), Fred Wesley on Trombone, and Robert Walker on keyboards. It's fairly hard to find outside of eBay as it was released on an indie label, but it's definitely worth checking out. Karl Denson is amazing.
I absolutely love this cd! So much so that it has been stolen from me twice (!) and I am re-buying it again! Not many other artists can make me dance the way he can! I recommend this cd and this artist to anyone who likes funky, jazzy music they can dance to.
