Synopsis
The super-fast Porsche 917 dominated international motorsport in the early 1970s. Designed to win the world-famous Le Mans 24 Hours race, the 917 became the focus of obsessive ambition for all connected with its spectacular existence. Here, from a Porsche expert with unprecedented access to company records and the engineers involved, is the full story of the 917, which in 1997 was voted the world's greatest racing car. Includes coverage of 917 development, the 1970 Le Mans 917 win, the 1100bhp racers, and drivers Elford, Redman, Attwood and Bell describing racing in an era when mistakes could so often prove fatal. Must-have literature for your racing library!, After the 917 broke Porsche's 19-year drought at Le Mans in 1970, it went on to win the Can-Am Series two years running. Porsche expert Peter Morgan gained unprecedented access to Porsche records and 917 engineers and drivers to bring enthusiasts the story of this legendary race car in full-color. Detailed are the rivalry between Ferry Porsche's sons and his nephew, Ferdinand Piech, who spearheaded the development of the 917. Engineers describe the development of turbochargers for auto racing, while drivers like Dickie Attwood, Hans Herrmann, and Derek Bell chronicle the 917's brilliant motorsport career.

As described and arrived on time. The listing included a "best offer" option, and the seller and I had a spirited back and forth, after which I was able to purchase my item at a fantastic price. Kudos to Mase3retro for excellent communication skills and great sense of humor! Bargaining for this item was probably the most fun I've had on eBay, ever, and I can't heap enough praise on what may well be the best seller on eBay. Thank you so very much. I look forward to doing business with you again.

  • A must read!

If you're a Porsche-o-file, or even just an all around gear head, you need to read this book. It's a pretty complete history on the 917. It gives you development details and race history. Including information on the 917/20 and both the Can-Am models. 2 greasy thumbs, WAY UP!!!

  • Porsche 917 by Peter Morgan (1999)

An excellent desciption of the evolution of Porsche 917. It lets us see the developments and competitions through the eyes of a real insider of Porsche Werks, it places these enourmous engineering and drivers efforts into the landscape of the European Championship of Makes and CanAm races. Also great in characterizing the main figures of the racing cars area and also those of Porsche Werks alike. Great pictures, very enjoyable style. If you are interested in the great competition cars of the late 60s-early 70s, if you want to be close to the great drivers and events of the era you should not miss it. A GREAT BOOK.

  • Porsche 917 by Peter Morgan (1999)

This is a great 'gearhead' book. It has enough technical info to enjoy along with of personal glimpses of racing greats. I was very pleased with the whole book. You won't be disappointed if you love great cars and good stories.
