Four of Britains oldest pubs have taken part in a unique trip back into history as their past has been unearthed by a team of archaeologists who have discovered a horde of buried treasures. Well known comedian Rory McGrath (Two Men in a Trench) got together with field archaeologist Paul Blinkhorn and his team of time travellers to set out to discover what lies beneath the surface at four historic alehouses reflecting their role at the heart of communities for many centuries and of course to sample a few good ales. For the licensees participating in the new Pub Dig series, it was a time when they were just as interested in what was being pulled out of the ground as they were in pulling pints. And what a haul the four historic pubs provided! The licensees say the experience has stimulated them to find out more about the colourful past of their pubs and the role they have played shaping local history over many years.
