This would be an excellent Math book (or series) for home schooling. I have been a public school teacher for over 30 years, and I have used this particular book for sixth-grade students for several years with GREAT success. It has constant review and practice so the student learns the concepts well and retains them. The instructions and explanations in the student copy is great so a teacher's edition is not really necessary. Saxon is an incremental series and has books for all grade levels. There is also a testing packet that gives a check-up after every 5 lessons. I highly recommend it. These books run around $40 from the publisher, but I got a personal copy (just like new) to keep at home from an ebay auction for $10.
Ilove Saxon for math and have used it for both of my boys since Kindergarten. It's systematic approach is the perfect style for my systematic boys. Each day's "mixed practice" reviews lessons past. So there in an all-inclusive review every day. I love that! In the 120-135 lessons from each book only one concept is covered. It gives the child a chance to REALLY focus and learn a process before moving on to something more advanced. And the vocabulary is also challenging. Students have to learn the proper mathematical terms such as quotient, divisor, etc... I like this, but my boys do too as it makes them feel as though they are learning on an advanced level. This is not a math program that you can cover in 15 minutes a day, however. We spend nearly an hour on math, and we only do the odd or even mixed-practice problems. But it is well worth it, my boys are 2 years ahead of the public school in math. I love the older hard-backed versions of Saxon's math program better than the soft-backed newer version. The books and answer keys are easier to handle.Read full review
I've been very happy with Saxon. They definately teach the child in realistic, gradual increments. They provide lots of extra problems for more practice if necessary. If the student gets stuck on a problem, it's very easy to find the lesson that teaches that concept and work through it by re-reading the lesson. It has proved a very effective math course, my is successfully taking her six children through each Saxon grade level. I successfully graduated, having used Saxon all the way except for Algebra 1/2. Five star curriculum.
Saxon Math is mentioned with awe in homeschooling circles. Here's a blurb from Saxon Publishers.com: Saxon Publishers commitment to education, and to the belief that all students have a right to be educated, is reflected in its mission to ensure access to instructional materials with proven records of success. Saxon's focus is on results, both tangible and intangible. Saxon's tangible results can be seen in improving test scores and the intangible results include those 'light-bulb moments' when a student realizes they are able to comprehend a concept. It is this devotion to creating these results that drives us every day. What makes each book so different from the usual public school offerings is its lack of non-math distractions such as photos, biographies, and "real life" examples. Saxon Math is only MATH. Each lesson builds on previous lessons from earlier grades. Each lesson is chock-full of practice examples, problem sets, reviews and new concepts. Saxon works!Read full review
My daughter used Saxon Math 65 last year and we found it easy to use, so we bought Saxon 76 for this year. I love that this book makes learning the math concepts easy for my 11 year old, and also easy for me to review and remember so teaching it is easy. My daughter finds this easy to use and easy to understand. The book does not teach a concept then never use it again, it continuously reviews as it teaches new lessons. We have not used other math books so I can not compare it, but again we love the Saxon Math enough that we're completely happy with them.
