Offiziell grundete sich die FARC als Guerillatruppe im Jahr 1964. Bis heute gilt sie als die alteste und starkste Rebellenorganisation Kolumbiens, was sie als Gegenstand von Konfliktanalysen besonders interessant werden lasst. Ebenfalls ist die FARC interessant, da im Laufe ihrer Existenz zahlreiche Friedensverhandlungen zwischen Vertretern der FARC und der Regierung stattfanden. Ein erster Friedensversuch wurde Mitte der 1980er Jahre unternommen. Nachdem dieser scheiterte, folgten Anfang und Ende der 1990er Jahre weitere Verhandlungen. Der jungste Friedensdialog begann im November 2012. Das Ergebnis ist bisher offen und wird von der Zivilbevoelkerung mit skeptischer Hoffnung verfolgt. Zur Analyse des bewaffneten, innerstaatlichen Konflikts ist ein Blick auf die Motivation der FARC sinnvoll, da diese viel uber dessen Prolongation und Herausforderungen bei der Beilegung verrat. Der Begriff Motivation wird dabei als das Streben von Personen oder Personengruppen nach Zielen oder Objekten verstanden. In der motivationalen Konfliktanalyse sind dabei zwei Autoren massgeblich: Paul Collier mit seinem oekonomischen Ansatz einer greed-gestutzten Motivationstheorie und Klaus Schlichte mit seiner Theorie des Shadow of Violence und der politischen Unzufriedenheit bewaffneter Akteure. Ihre Erklarungsansatze verhalten sich oppositionar zueinander, denn wahrend Collier eine Kosten-Nutzen-Rechnung aufstellt, stutzt Schlichte seine Annahmen auf sozialwissenschaftlich-politische UEberlegungen.
