A book I wish I would have received as a child. Mother was an alcoholic, suicidal, physically abusive verbally destructive, emotionally draining, fragile creature. Our absent dad is a homosexual, narcissistic socio-path / pscyho-path who got away with murder 50 years earlier. We have lost 5 out of 25 cousins to suicide so far (that doesn't count drugs, alcohol-related death, or over-eating contributing to early death). In any event, the author's sample stories help me have empathy for other hurt children and provided encouragement to start the journey to healing at age 53. May God reckon with the rest!

This book is perfect for someone who has to deal with difficult parents as an adult. It gives many tips and real life situations in which most people can relate. If you are even looking at this review, that means you are dealing with difficult parents and I would highly recommend this book. I have given it to my sister years ago and she still refers to it whenever she needs to. I recently bought myself another copy, as it is very good to re-read some sections as the need arises. This book is excellent! ** Also check out her other book called "Emotional Blackmail", it's another super helpful book. If you feel that anyone is using guilt, fear, or obligation to control you, this book is for you! I can't say enough good things about these books, there are no others like them out there that deal with these complicated relationships. Susan Forward really understands the relationship between parent and child and how complex this is. She gives great examples on how to handle difficult exchanges, as well as actual things to say to diffuse confrontations in your favor. If you have a controlling parent, this is a must read. It helps heal old wounds, such as dealing with a parent who criticizes or teases. These techniques work on anyone, including co-workers and relatives. As someone who was abused as a child, this is a very helpful resource to have at your side as you heal and try to start anew. It's a little basic, but that's important for a book that is meant as a resource rather than a diagnosis. This book is great to accompany therapeutic efforts needed to move forward from all the harm parents can do. It's also a very useful resource to give to people who may be questioning the circumstances they grew up with because they've been too afraid to question the parenting methods they were subjected to. This book can really open your eyes, but in the same hand provide you with the tools to start making change for the better. I absolutely recommend reading through this book regardless of how you may currently think your childhood was.
I bought this book the year it came out. I have suggested it to so many people. Everyone knows someone that was a victim, is a victim, or is the struggling parent. I was a Day Care worker and wanted to recognize children with toxic parents. I suggest to others that when you read it, you need to keep in mind, the parents, the grandparents, yourself if it is for you, the children and their children. All generations have to be forgiven to start the healing. Without forgiveness, the healing will not complete. It doesn't mean you set yourself up for more punishment, It means, simply, learn to let go of anger and revenge as well as hurt and begin to heal. Generation after generation can only heal when one person decides to end the pain and start a new way of raising children and being a better parent. This book can give anyone that reads it direction to do just that as well as direction to guide others through the steps of healing.Read full review
Do not let the title fool you. This book shows all the different types of parents there are from controlling, manipulative, alcoholic, verbally abusivem those that beat their children, and others who molest (fathers & mothers). It describes how the family structure works, helps you get in touch with your feelings, and then shows an exact path to follow to heal. The second part of the book gives you step by step directions on how to have a normal or most normal with the people who have hurt you in life. The information in this book is worth $10,000! I want to give it to everyone I know. Please read this as there is hope.
