    Probably one of, if not the most, underestimated writer of the 20th century, Vaino Linna, depicts war in all its dry, monstrous brutality. It reminds of the "tales of Sevastopol" but, unlike Tolstoy, Linna lacks the rethoric that, often, the Russian likes to indulge on. The author, with its sheer realism, throws the reader in the front line; I found the first pages difficult to read, as though it would be me hiding under the brush, paralysed with fear, and helplessly witness the death of a friend, butchered by a bomb. This book is a memorial and a warning to all of those who perished and will perish in these massacres called war, as every simple person, no matter what country, belief, ideology they belonged to, is a victim. Vaino Linna subtly makes sure that the reader understands that ...
