An earlier review by Robbie about the D28 where there is less criticism
very articulate across all strings. Bass is a bit under stated. I don't know why, but it's a D 28 I purchased, not d 28 M. the D28 is 2008 model. Initially I was very underwhelmed by it's performance and setup. Setup is easy, and I lowered the action considerably. Initially the guitar was really lacking in bass. However by experimenting with different strings and gauges it is now a bit of a canon. The d28 really likes heavier strings in the bottom end. This guitar is one of the most even toned guitar I have ever heard. It is very articulate right across all strings. Nothing lacks other than a bit of shimmer in the high end. If you want that, use Elixir phosphur bronze strings. That will really make the guitar shine. Much more pleasing guitar than a Gibson J45 I recently owned. One of the most ordinary, over rated guitars on the planet.
Vastly over rated guitar. Tone may be balanced but there is nothing particularly nice about D28s. I've owned 2 and it's been near impossible to get any complex sounds out of them. They can sound like cardboard boxes, little bass. They do have a very balanced sound and are great for professional quality recordings via microphone. Also if you're a bluegrass player, which is most unlikely in Australia, they do can be heard over banjos and mandolins etc. If you're after an emotive, great sounding instrument, keep looking cause the Martin D28 certainly isn't one of them. I've owned some great chinese instruments, and some very expensive USA made guitars, so I know my instruments. Most likely the HD28 has a wider frequency range, as does the D35. In response to heyyeahyou about a tradesperson blaming their tools. I'm sorry but some tools just get blunt or aren't up to scratch. I know guitars well. Do the research. There are numerous forums out there saying the same as me. D28 guitars can definately sound like cardboard boxes. Materials used. So what. Most guitars today use sitka spruce, east indian rosewood and sitka spruce for bracing. They all don't sound like D28s though, thankfully. Some sound like canons, grand pianos, open and delightful. My experience with D28s is that they are some of the most ordinary guitars on the planet for anything other than recording and possibly playing live via onboard electronics should anyone desire to put that into their D28. However, pre 1970 D28s might be a different story due to the age of the guitars and the use of Brazilian Rosewood. East Indian Rosewood can sound just as good. I've kept many guitars in my collection but let the D28s go. I have a Huss and Dalton DTR with Cocobola back and sides. It is AMAZING and what one would expect from a high end martin. Only the Marquis comes anywhere near to it in anyway. D28s are hit or miss and there's plenty online to say that. I"ve been researching, playing and buying guitars for over 30 years. Have sold them for a living. There are some magic guitars from USA , Japan, Korea and China, and there are plenty of duds as well. I have played music many times that has emotionally moved people to tears, and joy. I am not a hack and I don't blame my instruments for poor playing. Take my word. D28s can sound like boxes stuffed with socks. That's just a fact. If you haven't experienced that then you have a good D28.

I own a D28. I purchased it new in 1997 & it's a wonderful guitar. It has been played & it keeps getting better. Its body is constructed with rosewood & braced with spruce. It does not sound like a cardboard box because this is impossible given the tone woods mentioned. An inability to extract nice emotive sounds may in essence be the player's fault. A bad tradesperson blames his tools as the saying says so maybe a bad player blames his/her guitar.I own a D28. I purchased it new in 1997 & it's a wonderful guitar.
