About this product

Product Information

A gorgeously written novel that marks the debut of an astonishing new voice in psychological suspense. As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a twelve-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddoxhis partner and closest friendfind themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery. Now, with only snippets of long-buried memories to guide him, Ryan has the chance to uncover both the mystery of the case before him and that of his own shadowy past. Richly atmospheric, stunning in its complexity, and utterly convincing and surprising to the end, "In the Woods" is sure to enthrall fans of "Mystic River" and "The Lovely Bones."

Item was heavily worn with a crease in the cover. Cover illustration was from an older printing than shown due to the use of stock images. Was purchased with 2 other books. Out of the 3 books this was the only one that arrived in the package. The other 2 were missing and the seller did not respond to any of my messages regarding the missing books.

    Well Worth Reading

A long story and a bit heavy reading at times though I was always ready to get back to it. Good twists and turns and I enjoyed Ms. French's writing style. The story's end was somewhat expected, and I was sorry that it couldn't be better. But it was all in line with the overall theme. I would like to think that the storyteller went on to a good life.

  • So much for so little...

First of all, i would like to mention that this book is very well written. I am very pleased with the amount of work put into making the reader emmotionaly connected with the characters in the book. I was taken away to the small Irish town and lost among an array of colorful characters. There is so much time put into developing a relationship with the characters in the book. The author makes it a point to not make anything too exciting happen because that would be "unrealistic." I appreciate the effort to create a realistic story, but it causes long periods of nothing much at all. After reading the entire book I am left with a sour taste in my mouth. There is little satisfaction and i was left feeling frustrated and angry. Although, I would never feel that way if I wasn't strongly drawn ...

  • Good Read

I found this to be a very interesting story with well rounded characters and a killer plot. You can almost feel the main characters pain. I enjoyed Ms. French's writing style, not typical of mystery writers. The only thing I didn't like was I felt she sometimes went into a bit too much detail about what a character was thinking or a particular situation. Other than that I found it to be a fine read and look forward to reading her next book.

  • Very good
