This review is of the 2005 hardback edition. It is a HUGE book in terms of its physical size! It is the size of a coffee table book, something like 15" by 11" by 1.5" thick, really a very nicely put together and weighty tome. I once had a 1983 first edition. Based on my memory of that first edition, the 2005 edition has several additional illustrations by Ralph Steadman. I think the text of the book is the same as the first edition. So glad to have a new (to me) and fabulous copy of this "forgotten" classic of gonzo journalism!

This is not exactly the type of Hunter text that I expected. It is more along the lines of Songs of the Doomed, rather than F & L in Las Vegas. The brutal escapades are few, but the writing is still excellent. Includes good stuff about the history of Hawaii, mostly as it relates to the white explorers and includes some fun fishing excursions. The Steadman drawings are ample and fantastic, but really push up the price of the book. But if you are a Hunter freak (guilty), suck it up and pony up, it will be worth it.
Hunter Thompson at his best…

Awesome Hardcover book. Taschen knows how to make a quality book, this oversized edition is no exception. Very well made and Ralph Steadman's art really jumps off the page. Excellent art work combined with the masterful storytelling by Hunter S. Thompson makes this book a must have for any quality book enthusiast.
