This is an amazing mono recorder. I use it to record my piano practices and I love it. It comes with all the feature one needs in a mono recorder. The auto rewind counter is a great feature. I connected this machine to my Yamaha Avantgrande N1 Piano’s aux out. It records on normal, CrO2 and metal tapes. The sound is amazing. It’s perfect for what I’m using it for. I also have a PMD 430 that I use for stereo purposes. But, for solo instrumental recordings that doesn’t necessarily need to be in stereo this is perfect.

The Marantz monitor-recorder was a classic in its time. It was a multi-purpose unit designed to meet the requirements of nearly any real-time recording challenge. In the absence of digital technology it could be used to record from a variety of sources in real time and play back reliably with options for pitch, volume and playback speed. Its versatility made it suitable for applications in law enforcement, education and private use, especially good for the practicing musician, both for monitoring instrumental proficiency and listening to teaching tapes.

This is a very dependable recording device with lots of useful features. I wish it also made pizza and espresso: other than that, it is perfect!

Marantz PMD221 was an excellent choice for me since I've been using them for the past 15 years. The two that I had broke down and this was perfect. The quality is exceptional and playback is perfect. I will probably be looking for a second one in the near future. I'm coming back.

I caught the vintage gear bug. Wanted to get a cassette recorder/player to play around with. This Marantz is a gem. I expected it to be broken because it was inexpensive enough to warrant repairing. To my total surprise, it records/plays. I haven't used it much as I just received it, but I'm incredibly satisfied with my purchase. This isn't even taking into consideration the charitable side of this purchase. Even if it didn't work and I had to get it repaired, buying it contributes to computer classes, mobility training and other awesome stuff through blindcenter dot org!!! So, not only was I satisfied with the cassette recorder/player, I inadvertently get to contribute to an awesome cause. Doesn't get much better than that!

I provide analog audio transfers for Archival and Preservation along with restoration services and forensic audio. I actually purchased this particular unit as a backup tape player because it has excellent specifications for the playback of MONO format cassette tapes. Most tapes in this format were recorded by handheld recorders which are not necessarily the best for preservation playback.

Incredible construction, looks and feels great. Pleasant sound. Input Limiter/ALC is very appreciated. A lot of flutter, but it's cassette, what do you expect. As noted in title, this is mono, so 2-track.

Like: it has mic. & line inputs/outputs high quality recording,m even at half speed has bias settings for different tapes it has variable bass and treble cut control it has a variable pitch (speed) control-in addition to the the half speed button. This means you can record at half speed. You can play it back at full speed through your computer soundcard to lower the pitch so it sounds normal. A one hour lecture can be heard in thirty minutes. If I am familiar with the material it is understandable for a great review! it has a tape counter it was cheap Dislike: The power adapter was broken, and had to be repaired FFW and RW button only lock into place with certain tapes. other tapes won't even play.Read full review
