SynopsisUsing widely scattered and previously unknown primary sources, Parrish's biography of Confederate general Richard Taylor presents him as one of the Civil War's most brilliant generals, eliciting strong performances from his troops in the face of manifold obstacles in three theaters of action.
I have been interested in the relatively obscure My. Generals Richard Taylor and Edmund Kirby Smith since childhood. This book is a very readable bio of Taylor. The son of Pres. Zachary Taylor, he was one of 3 prewar Confederate lieutenant generals not to have attended West Point or other military school. He was integral to Jackson's Valley Campaign. He single handedly defended western Louisiana for 2 years. He blunted and defeated Banks' Red River Campaign. He ended the war as departmental commander in eastern Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. He played a significant role as a moderate secessionist before the war and a moderate opponent of Reconstruction post war. I normally prefer history to biography. This book satisfies my need for history in a biographical context.
