About this product

Product Information

“Metroid” was developed for the Nintendo Entertainment System gaming console by Nintendo, and the game was released in 1987. This title helped spawn an entire series of games, and has been very influential, creating a whole subgenre of similar games with an emphasis on exploration, key items that open up new areas, and secrets. The game also helped to invent speedrunning as it rewards players for completing the game in under a certain amount of time with a unique ending. “Metroid” has been ported to the Game Boy Advance (GBA) as well as the Nintendo Virtual Console on the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U.In “Metroid,” gamers play as Samus Aran. She is a mercenary hired by the Galactic Federation to prevent a group of space pirates on planet Zebes from corrupting captured metroids, which are extremely dangerous alien creatures, to use them as a biological weapon. To do this, Samus Aran must break into their base and attack the leader of the space pirates, Ridley, and his second in command, Kraid. She must then defeat the evil Mother Brain, the final boss in the game. After doing so, she must place bombs within the base and escape before they detonate.Samus begins the game with only a small blaster, which is capable of only beating some enemies. She can also jump, but all other abilities must be unlocked as the game progresses. These include her ability to contract into a ball, to roll into tight spaces, to climb walls, and to lay bombs. She may gain more powerful blasters with varying effects on enemies. Each ability is held by an ancient. Abilities enable her to access more parts of the game, although she is still free to explore any place she has been to thus far, and exploration is often rewarded by the placement of hidden power-ups and other items. Players select their active item easily with the select button on the NES controller.Throughout “Metroid,” Samus encounters various native creatures and monsters that seek to bar her path. Some are passive while others engage Samus immediately and demand a quick response. Memorizing the layout of Zebes is essential as players need to create a mental map in order to proceed through the game in the most efficient manner. The game's regions are broken up into Norfair, Brinstar, Tourian, and the lairs of Kraid and Ridley. Each area has a distinct color scheme, helping players to determine where they are in the game.“Metroid” is a definitive game for the NES system. It offers a different and unique ending depending on how long it takes the player to complete the video game. “Metroid” makes full use of the graphics chip within the NES. With hours of replayability and a password save system, this game is a must-have for any NES collector or video game enthusiast. “Metroid” is a classic title for the Nintendo Entertainment System that stands out in the adventure game genre even decades after its initial release.

The GCN looks exactly as described and shown in the pictures. All the buttons are operational, it reads discs, and all the bottom plates are there. I haven't tested every controller port, but the first two and the memory card slots are working great. The GCN is clean, it was packaged exceptionally well. Sam Tech shipped it extremely quickly and it arrived two days before the initial ETA. Overall, this purchase was well worth the value and I would shop with Sam Tech again. A+++++++++

    A Classic for Its Time

Metroid is a groundbreaking non-linear adventure game that paved the way for many exploration games. It is still very fun to play, but it is very much a product of its time and hasn't aged particularly well. There is not an in-game map so finding your way around can be a headache, but finding a simple map online fixes this problem. Once you know where to go and what to do, this game can easily be finished in a day. It is probably more geared towards collectors or nostalgics of the 8-bit era, but it's still worth a visit for any gamer who wants to work through the series. For gamers who don't have the patience for older games, check out Super Metroid or Metroid Zero Mission. These are the same general gameplay and storyline with much improved graphics and control.

  • What an important and great game for the NES

This game really takes me back to growing up as a kid playing with my friends. So obviously there is nostalgia value for me but it is more than that. What a great game for the NES! When I play this game and compare it to most other NES games it is so much better. The colors and characters are vivid. The gameplay and movement are extraordinary. The music has a genuinely creepy feel and is well orchestrated. You have to think and explore a relatively large world especially for an 8 bit game. It is challenging and fun. This might be the greatest NES game ever made. Everybody with an NES should have this game in their collection.

  • Great NES game

This game is fun, challenging and full of secrets. If you’re new to collecting NES games this is a must have. The Metroid story and gameplay is great and if you like this game you’ll love the other Metroid games in the series. Metroid 2 for Gameboy and Super Metroid for the SNES are must haves as well. I feel the games get even better as they go on. This game comes in the yellow label and silver label, just an FYI it’s the same game just different release dates.

  • Picture didn't match the game received. Game label was scratch and a little bubbling. I got a good deal so I will live with it but not as described.

  • Best Game 1987

Metroid is a great game. Although there aren’t any save stations like the later series, when you die, you respawn with all of your equipment. The only way to save is to use passwords, but otherwise, it’s a fairly challenging game with lots to do.
