About this product

Product Information

The story of modern Australia begins in eighteenth-century Britain, where people were hanged for petty offences but crime was rife, and the gaols were bursting. From this situation was born the Sydney experiment, with criminals perceived to be damaging British society transported to Sydney, an 'open air prison with walls 14,000 miles thick'. Eleven ships were dispatched in 1781, and arrived in Australia after eight hellish months at sea. Tom Keneally describes the first four years of the 'thief colony' and how, despite the escapes, the floggings, the murders and the rebellions, it survived against the odds to create a culture which would never have been tolerated in its homeland but which, in Australia, became part of the identity of a new and audacious nation. By the author of Schindler's Ark, since made into the internationally acclaimed film, Schindler's List.

Rarewaves is my favourite eBay retailer. I've bought a large number of CD's from them, and this time was no different. I always receive excellent service, and they have great communication with buyers. The CD's arrived in pristine condition and were extremely well packaged (very safe and secure). They've got a huge range and very competitive prices. Very worthwhile saving this seller to come back for more (there's so many other CD's I could've bought). I give them a solid 5 stars +++ easily.

My item arrived but it wasn’t the colour advertised however, after contacting the seller they replied quickly, they were so apologetic and offered a partial refund which I gladly accepted. We all make mistakes but it’s how it’s dealt with that counts and this seller was great. The record was still new, the packaging was good quality so it arrived without any damage and the record is in perfect condition. The price was fair too. I’m still happy overall and I would buy from this seller again.

Packaging XL+. I was afraid to open package. It's like opening a B'day present w/o the Gift wrap. Post cost's very reasonable. Excellent delivery time. Arrived on time, considering our mail usually takes over 2wk from anywhere in QLD, bcoz we're remote. 10Q very much. XL+

  • Brilliant read

Every Australian should read this remarkable book. The research which Tom K did was well rewarded. This book tells the story that most of us only know as a couple of facts. It is detailed History but very easy to read and a real page-turner. Governor Phillip comes out of it very well and proved an inspired choice as first governor. Tom K also identifies a host of other real characters and their often tragic stories.
