I got these in order to round out my collection of 3D films directed by Robert Rodriguez. I've been collecting 3D films for years, and Rodriguez was an early adopter of 3D. I saw "Spy Kids 3D" in a theater with the old style anaglyphic 3D glasses (before the newer polarized glasses and digital projectors became common) back in 2003. Both of these films are a mix of 2D and 3D. The original subtitle instructions on when to put on your 3D glasses are included in the films. Spy Kids 3D is also available in anaglyphic 3D, which is vastly inferior to blu-ray 3D. This two-pack blu-ray set, the subject of this review, is true blu-ray 3D, not anaglyphic. This is the third film in the Spy Kids series, and really the only good film in the series is the first one. More than the first film, Spy Kids ... Several famous actors appear in this film, in addition to the Spy Kids series regulars including Ricardo Montalban, Sylvester Stallone and Salma Hayek. The other disk, "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3D" (2005) is a lot like a home movie for kids, and it was inspired by stories invented by Robert Rodriguez's own children, who appear briefly in the film, and can be seen in the disk extras. One actor in the film who became famous later on in the Twilight series is Taylor Lautner. David Arquette is also in the film. Both of these films feature a lot of impressive visuals, and good 3D effects. Both also feature some 2D scenes (I think the idea of 2D scenes was to reduce eye strain and headaches associated with the old anaglyphic 3D systems). Naturally, both films were shot in 3D, not converted from 2D to 3D in post production, like most recent 3D releases. Both of these films are inoffensive and both contain positive moral messages for kids. So if you like to collect old 3D films, or you have kids who like 3D, this two-disk set is worth getting.
