Tindersticks' second consecutive, eponymously titled double-LP set refines the approach of their debut; while every bit as ambitious and adventuresome, it achieves an even greater musical balance, stretching into luxuriously long compositional structures and more intricate arrangements. While Stuart Staples' songs remain as obsessive and haunted as before, he wards off his demons with fits of pitch-black humor (the narrative "My Sister") and a more tender perspective; similarly, while his funereal vocals remain the focus, there's a new reliance on extended instrumental passages, and even a pair of duets ("Travelling Light" -- a collaboration with the Walkabouts' Carla Torgerson) another awesome triumph of mood and atmosphere. 1 El Diablo en el Ojo 3:32 2 A ... Tindersticks second album 'This way up'
I had heard 'Travelling light' from this album when it came out in the 90s and liked it though I didn't buy it as albums were much more expensive then. Like a lot of music, I forgot about it though for reasons that I'm not sure of, I had the tune in my head one day and put the album on Spotify. - WOW I'm not often that easily impressed with music on first hearing, this was not what I was expecting. An odd mixture of lounge jazz, quirky pub singer-esque vocals, experimental english music with superb arrangements, intelligent lyrics and slick production. This album is a true original and not like anything that I know of that preceded it. It seems to be still well sought after on ebay, so I suppose there are other late converts around like myself or just perhaps people who were too skint to ...
