The Pentacon Six is a wonderful option to get into medium format photography. Camera is light weight and features a nice quality build. Feels solid without weighing a ton. While there are obviously differences between this and the more popular Hasselblad 500CM, this camera is a nice bang for the buck. Camera is really a joy to shoot with and produces some nice quality images. Tones and textures are beautiful. Additionally it's a real attention grabber. I have no trouble getting people to pose for me when I'm carrying the Pentacon Six. If you do purchase one be sure to have it checked and cleaned. While my camera does a nice job it sometimes will skip a frame when I advance the film so I'll have to have it checked. Otherwise it's performing great.

Great medium format SLR. Smaller and quieter than a Pentax 67. All mechanical, no battery needed. Terrific, lenses from fisheye to 500mm and beyond. Metering only with metered prism. Which are heavy no matter what camera. Curved ground glass viewfinder has good contrast. Plastic, flat Fresnel screens are available from overseas. They are brighter but less contrast. Forget flash photography with approx a 1/20 flash synch. You must follow the film loading instructions exactly or the spacing will be off between the images. Never let the film winding lever snap back by itself or damage can occur. Very reasonably priced on the European market. Very few for sale in the US. Beware of overseas sellers especially from the Netherlands. They hack these cameras to barely work and hope they work long enough to leave you stuck with it. "cupog" is a reliable seller on ebay from Slovakia. But it is good advice to have someone available to completely service any P6 you buy. The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars. There are lots of accessories available for these cameras. Extension tubes, bellows, prism finders. Right angle viewer, magnifying viewer and eye cup that attaches to the prism finder. The only problem with these cameras is that they are so old and so few of them have been serviced. The old lubricant needs to be changed and everything adjusted. Then you have a really fine camera. As good as any Hasselblad, Pentax or Mamiya. At the end of the day it is possible to have world class quality photos with this camera. It's all up to the photographer.Read full review

I got the Pentacon to have a medium format camera that I could take with me in a fishing boat or a canoe. I love the look of square format, but I wouldn't want to get a Hasselblad wet.The Pentacon camera body is built like a brick. It shoots really smoothly because of the focal plane shutter, so I can hand hold it down to 1/30 of a second without any problems. The slow flash synch is no issue to me since I use this as a walk-around camera. The other important thing about the Pentagon is that you can buy the superb Zeiss Jena lenses pretty cheaply, and that the really stunning Exakta Schneider lenses also fit it. That lets you bring back great negatives from a camera that you could carry anywhere.
I had many cameras, but not a decent medium format. I thought I might like the Pentacon six as it resembles the experience of using an SLR vs. a Mamiya type body. I bought this from 'cupog' who does a complete cleaning and check out of each item he sells. The camera functions flawlessly. The only thing I wish this camera had is a mirror lock up. This modification can be made but seems too extensive for my tastes. I love the mechanical shutter timer as well.
I love this thing. It has both pentaprism and the simpler waist level viewfinder attachments, making it a 6x6 square format that I can carry around and shoot like a 35 mm slr, albeit bulkier. Mine has a light leak that exposes the bottom right corner of some negatives, but I'm ok with it. It's the first medium format camera I've had. There's a huge mirror inside which slaps hard, may cause blur at speeds of 1/15 - 1/60. And the flash port only sometimes works... So there's some issues but I still like it! Lol k thx Bai.
