I love this chartplotter/fishfinder and have 3. What I like so much about this GPS over others is how easy it is to use. I've owned other models and used most every one made, but this is the easiest to use, allows you to customize the data that you want displayed, and requires very few keystrokes. It's a shame that Garmin will no longer update the charts for the models that use the Garmin Data Cards, because it forced me to get a 546s for the bigger boat, so I'd have access to the most up to date chart. I've found that for the most part though, the charts don't change that much, so if your using this in an area where you have local knowledge, it's not a big deal. Still, I think it's terrible customer service on Garmin's part.
This GPSMAP was the top of the line during its intro. Sharp 320 x 320 graphics. Everyone buys the approx $125 bluechart for their specific geographic area. Mine Jersey to NY including ICW and Delaware Bay. This is an excellant fishing machine able to connect to multiple different transducers. While I own a 178 all attachments will cross over to the 178C. MAIN NEGATIVE ITEM to all current and future owners. If you salt water fish you will have to purchase multiple power cords. On the main power connector on back of unit look closely at all the pins. The 178 and 178C I would bet the earlier version 172 (do not know) have one pin which is shorter than the rest of the pins, it is the power pin. As mates and unmates occur the unit starts to power up then shut off intermittently. Buy another power cord all fixed.Read full review
Screen was burned just like the prior unit I owned, must have been the flaw in this Garmin product
