About this product

Product Information

Graham Robb's brilliant biography moves Rimbaud on from his perpetual adolescence where our imaginations have held him to show the extent of his transformations. From phenomenally precocious schoolboy, he became Europe's most shocking and exhilarating poet, author of poems that range from the exquisite to the extreme. But this brief, five-year period as the enfant-terrible of French literature is only one small side of Rimbaud's story.Robb takes us on a biographical journey through three continents and many different identities. Rimbaud emerges from this stunning work of biographical scholarship and historical imagination as an even more complex, ambiguous and fascinating figure than ever before.

  • One of the best biographical works I have ever read

This biography is purely excellent. The author differs from most of Rimbaud's biographers by his thorough research which never seems to deviate in over interpreted significations. Rimbaud is presented as an individual not a myth, and that is in my view the most important testimony of the author's respect towards his subject. Rimbaud the myth has too often smothered the man who came to live and struggle in a colonised Africa in search of himself and in search of some hypothetical rapid income. I lost my first copy and I am delighted to have found this copy to re-read this very well written and knowledgeable work.
