Ask anyone about their thoughts on Saving Private Ryan and they will undoubtedly mention the scenes in the first 20mins or so and the impact it made on them. It is true that the scenes of the 'landings' leave a lasting impression. You can only imagine what it must have been like in real life if the film is anything to go by. The rest of the film continues with unimaginable events. Made the same impact on me as Schindler's List movie. Once you've seen the film, you'll never forget it. Watching the movie does make you think about the depths humanity can sink to at times. Don't want to give too much away about the film just incase you haven't seen it. If you haven't seen it yet, why not?? If you have seen it, you'll know exactly what I mean and will probably watch it again and again. I have! Definately a DVD that should be in your collection.Read full review
The first half hour of the movie gives us a fantasic and well produced insight to what happened at the beaches of Normandy in June 1944. The film has very realisic scenes specially the action scenes are impressing. Great photography and special effects as well. Then the story leads us into Spielbergs idea and purpose with this movie. This is not just an ordinary action movie, you see. Spielberg is Jewish and one might say that the invation of Normandy ment the first step to effectivly stop Nazi-Germany's attempt to exterimate the jews. Because of that, these soldiers are probably Speilbergs favourite heroes in history. So who is this private Ryan? Is he worth risking many lives for? In the second world war people/soldiers risked and gave their lives so that later generations can live in peace and freedom. So Ryan might be a representative of all of us who are enjoying life today. 'Are you a person that was worth dying for? If not - try to live your life in a better way tomorrow', is how I interprit Spielberg. Beside from this, a crucial moment of the film is when the guys that we follow in seach of private Ryan let a german POW go in stead of executing him and the ethical dilemma connected to this. Spielberg definately wants us to see this movie also in a ethical and philosophical way and not just as a war action movie. A very important film which together with Schindlers' list is a great contribution to the debate about WW2.Read full review
If you don't yet own or haven't yet seen this movie, then i suggest you buy it. Because this is one of the greatest movies of our time. Though it's true that this is not the type of movie you want to sit down with the family and eat popcorn, the emotional drive of the picture, the story's poignant messages, and the fantastic acting of the cast draws you into a world that is both dangerous and unpredictable. I give this movie my highest recommendation. Saving Private Ryan is a movie that makes you realize how life is precious and how honor and duty, though they are deep philosophical concepts that are praised in war, can put you in jeopardy of losing your life for something you may not believe in.
