The book is a well documented, well written, riveting account of the squalled conditions and brutality that existed in the Texas prison system prior to 1926. The author does go beyond 1925 in explaining how conditions gradually improved. What surprised me was, as Mr. Brown points out, that it wasn't until the 1980's, after the federal courts intervened, that conditions improved dramatically enough to satisfy liberal critics. This is a "must read" for anyone interested in penology or criminology. Reviewed: 7/7/06 PSW
