About this product

Product Information

When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned and suddenly adrift, jumps onto a passing train, he enters a world of freaks, grifters, and misfits - the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth - a second-rate travelling circus struggling to survive during the Great Depression, making one-night stands in town after endless town. Jacob, a veterinary student who almost earned his degree, is put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It is there that he meets Marlena, the beautiful young star of the equestrian act, who is married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. He also meets Rosie, an elephant who seems untrainable until he discovers a way to reach her. Water for Elephants is illuminated by a wonderful sense of time and place. It tells a story of a love between two people that overcomes incredible odds in a world in which even love is a luxury that few can afford.

  • Books are always better than the film

A love story…for those wanting a viewpoint of old circus entertainment in 20s America. I loved the story told by the youthful and aged protagonist and knowing the hero of the story is an elephant

  • A super read!

  • spent many happy hours losing myself in this book

the book offered a great deal more insight into the characters than the film did. but then again i only bought this book because rpatz was in the film. basically i would buy anything taht was associated with rpatz. iam a twimom and proud .......rpatz you rock my world only downside to this book was the fact that there was no pictures of rpatz and his lush back nom nom nom

  • i recommend this book as an easy reader. very engaging plot.

I bought this book after I watched the movie and simply fell in love with it. The story is engaging, involves a love story but incorporates many of the realities of life - both of the past (esp at the time of the great depression) and nowadays as issues like seperation from loved ones and abuse from superiors still happen.
