Slamming them together with aluminum foil allows you to have a physical representation of a shockwave traveling through a surface. The aluminum foil deforms and form concentric circles at the points of contact. When slamming the two ball bearings together also generates heat and paper burns when the experiment is conducted with printer paper. The balls collectively weigh 8 pounds so they are also good workout tools.
