About this product

Product Information

Owen Meany, the only child of a New Hampshire granite quarrier, believes he is God's instrument; he is. This is John Irving's most comic novel, yet Owen Meany is Mr. Irving's most heartbreaking character. "Roomy, intelligent, exhilarating and darkly comic...Dickensian in scope....Quite stunning and very ambitious." LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK REVIEW "John Irving is an abundantly and even joyfully talented storyteller." THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOKR EVIEW

"John Irving, who writes novels in the unglamorous but effective way Babe Ruth used to hit home runs, deserves a medal not only for writing this book but for the way he has written it. . . .A Prayer for Owen Meanyis a rare creation in the somehow exhausted world of late twentieth-century fiction-it is an amazingly brave piece of work . . . so extraordinary, so original, and so enriching. . . . Great book on reread 20 years later

I loaned out my copy years ago and it never came back. Happy to have this. One of his better novels. The print is pretty small in this edition.

  • You'll not soon forget Owen Meany

I've read everything John Irving's written and believe me, I love this author. He said his last book was the one he was supposed to write, and who could disagree? But I believe that A Prayer for Owen Meany is the one he was meant to write. It is truly astounding. It will draw you in like a magnet, and you'll find yourself barely able to put it down. I'd suggest a pot of coffee, a comfortable chair, and then sit back and be swept away. Owen Meany is not a character you'll soon forget. He and his story are truly a gift to any reader. You'll want to lend the book to friends, because once you've read it, you'll want everyone else to read it too. It's that good. It just is.

  • I Love Owen Meany

I just finished this book yesterday. I couldn't put it down. The storyteller of the book (who is a main character) goes into alot of detail that I skimmed over - regarding The Church and regarding The Vietnam War. I think that most of those passages were the author's personal view and had no real impact on the story. It is a rather long book - because there are so many storylines going on at the same time. The characters have obvious and hidden relationships with each other. You have to "stay on your toes" when you read this book so you don't miss anything! I highly recommend it!

  • A Moral Parable for Our Times, Even if a Bit Preachy

John Irvings' novel "A Prayer for Owen Meany" is a meditation on literature, history, and God. The book develops a convincing appraisal of Vietnam through a subtext of religious philosophizing. Irving's uses his protagonist Owen Meany as a latter-day prophet, or Christ-like figure, who dies a martyr after having inspired true Christian belief in his friend, and the story's narrator, Johnny Wheelwright. The book's countless subplots expand Irving's moral argument. Owen Meany is a diminutive boy and social outcast with a strange voice who accidentally kills his best friend's mother with a baseball. The event convinces him that he is an instrument of God, to be redeemed by martyrdom. Several of the scenes within the book provide seasoning for the narrative: the doltish headmaster ...

  • Typeface to small

I like the book, but the typeface is so small it's very difficult to read. They should have made the book larger. I'm not sure I can finish it because it's a strain on my eyes.
