Startech Makes Waves Again
I bought this to free up a pcie 16x slot, so I could get 16x for the video board. I could have upgraded from (2) 1.0TB SSDs to (1) 2.0TB SSD, for 300.00USD. But this was a less expensive way to fit the (2) 1.0TB drives into one slot. Plus, you can boot with a drive installed on the card, as long as the machine bios supports nvme boot, so I didn't have to reinstall the operating system. If you are unsure whether you machine will boot from a nvme drive, contact the manufacturer, or try google.com. if it can, a drive installex on this card will work for booting. I'm purposely trying to answer possible questions, in a non-technical way, so readers can figure out if they need this Startech card or not. It requires at least pcie 4x to work. The drives aren't quite as fast as they are on seperate single drive cards, but to get 16x video it's well worth it. I don't notice the speed drop on the SSDs. I'm not a benchmark guy. I don't use Microsoft or Apple software or operating syatems, and I haven't since 2000 A.D. So I have access to lower system metrics that give me a good idea of how well the hardware performs. I wring out the bottlenecks until the last one, which is the cpu. Then, I'm satisfied. This board helped me optimize the machine. I could also have used just (1) 1.0TB drive, but I really need 2.0TB of storage for a bit of headroom. I also partition SSDs to about 80% capacity, to extend the life of the drive. Mine should last about 20 years. It has a built-in switch to change drives at very high frequencies, and so avoids the need for bifurcation. The IC switch used is quite expensive, adding to the cost of the board. Newer motherboards have builtin bifurcation, so no need for this type of card. It's basically a stop gap measure so older PCs can take advantage of newer storage technologies (nvme m.2 sockets). There are plenty of SATA to ngff (m.2 socket) adapters, so this card is only called for on systems around 6-7+ years old, that lack completely, or provide only (1) m.2 sockets and fewer pcie lanes. You need 16 pcie lanes for a pcie 16x socket, 8 for 8x, and so forth. Cpus from a few years back are quite limited (14-20 pcie lanes). I give it five stars, because it does what it is designed for, although I've only used it with one motherboard.
