Synopsis
The beloved actor--and #1 bestselling author--writes about the personal philosophy that has carried him through his darkest hours, and speaks with others who have emerged from difficult periods with optimism to spare., There are many words to describe Michael J. Fox: Actor. Husband. Father. Activist. But readers of Always Looking Up will soon add another to the list: Optimist. Michael writes about the hard-won perspective that helped him see challenges as opportunities. Instead of building walls around himself, he developed a personal policy of engagement and discovery: an emotional, psychological, intellectual, and spiritual outlook that has served him throughout his struggle with Parkinson's disease. Michael's exit from a very demanding, very public arena offered him the time-and the inspiration-to open up new doors leading to unexpected places. One door even led him to the center of his own family, the greatest destination of all. The last ten years, which is really the stuff of this book, began with such a loss: my retirement from Spin City. I found myself struggling with a strange new dynamic: the shifting of public and private personas. I had been Mike the actor, then Mike the actor with PD. Now was I just Mike with PD Parkinson's had consumed my career and, in a sense, had become my career. But where did all of this leave Me? I had to build a new life when I was already pretty happy with the old one.. Always Looking Up is a memoir of this last decade, told through the critical themes of Michael's life: work, politics, faith, and family. The book is a journey of self-discovery and reinvention, and a testament to the consolations that protect him from the ravages of Parkinson's. With the humor and wit that captivated fans of his first book, Lucky Man, Michael describes how he became a happier, more satisfied person by recognizing the gifts of everyday life.

    • Revelations from a Hollywood Star

This book is a sort of a personal Michael's diary since the day his Parkinson's Disease has been unveiled. Michael writes from a very passionate and personal perspective his views on stem cell research, the most meaningful relationships to date with family, relatives, friends and colleagues, politics and the importance of running and taking care of a non-profit institution that gives support to other PD patients. What makes this book so pleasant to read is just that: it looks just like a personal diary we wish we had surreptitiously found and then, after finish reading, one would say: "I know this guy now, he is a normal person, who laughs, cries, argues, feels pain and thinks, just like all of us, and I could relate to his story at some points".

    • Always Looking Up

Instead of being a book that flows like life, Michael J Fox wrote this book in chunks, with each section being a different aspect of his life. It seemed a little confusing until I figured that out. It is well written, being quite descriptive, especially about his stem cell research drive! His discussion about being Jewish was something I never knew, but I'm glad he felt that it is important to his life! The book is for two book discussion groups I'm involved with.

    • Excellent

I purchased this book for my son because he has tremors. He really has respect and admiration for Michael J. Fox, as do I. The first time I started to read this book I immediately felt like these words were my son's. This book is Mr. Fox's own experiences and anyone who is experiencing Parkinson's or any other disease for that matter could benefit from reading this. Other books on Parkinson's are not always written by first hand experience.

    • GREAT BOOK!!!!!

This is a great book for anyone who has a friend or family member who suffers from Parkinsons. The way that Micheal descibes his feelings during his "off" time really created a picture and helped me to understand why someone with this dreaded disease does the things that they do.My Mother was diagnosed over 10 years ago and is steadily getting worse. She is currently reading it herself and has remarked how it makes her feel better to read about Micheals positive attitude. You will not be disappointed!!

    • Loved "Always Looking Up" by Michael J. Fox

I really enjoyed reading this book. Michael J. Fox writes, from personal experience, about his battle with Parkinson's Disease. It's good to see that his disease has not caused him to loose his sense of humor. This book will make you laugh, as well as cry. I learned a lot about Parkinson's disease that I did not know before, in this well written and informative book.
