One of the classics of all times this movie stars Richard Burton (The Wild Geese, Beckett, Where Eagles Dare, Cleopatra, etc) and Ava Gardner (Seven Days in May, 55 Days at Peking, On the Beach, Mogambo, etc) and several other stars of the era. The plot has defrocked alcoholic Rev. Shannon (Richard Burton) working as a tour guide in Mexico who steers a group of visiting American teachers to Maxine Faulk's (Ava Gardner) rundown hotel, where he soon becomes entangled in relationships with three very different women. The movie is based on Tennessee Williams play and during its era was considered to be sexually charged (possibly because of an affair that allegedly went on in the town of Puerto Vallarta Mexico-where the film was made-between two of the actor/actresses). The movie is directed by veteran director John Huston (Prizzi's Honor, Cannery Row, The Hobbit, Chinatown, etc) and he does another great job with this one-possibly the best of his entire career. Great acting and great directing will make this a movie that you will want to watch over and over and will give romantics and drama lovers a great movie to enjoy for an evening.Read full review
This is my all-time favorite movie. This is Tennessee William's best, most fully realized play. Huston and cast did an excellent job both in caputuring the atmosphere of the place and the depth of the characters. A defrocked minister played by Richard Burton reaches the "end of his rope" and attempts to escape to an old favorite hiding place to get himself together. Currently, the minister, the Reverend Lawrence T. Shannon is working as a tour guide with a bus load of church ladies lead by a bitter, closet-lesbian and another impetuous teenager who thinks she's in love with the reverend. It all culminates in the reverend being tied up in a hammock after an attempted suicide. While the reverend is tied up he has the most profound and life-changing conversation with a travelling artist played by Deborah Kerr. This movie (and the play it's based on) are a must-see.Read full review

They don't make movies like this anymore. A deep look at human connection beyond sexuality. A look way down the well of human hearts. Unforgettable. Touching. Speaks to why people matter, how we need each other to pull our covers in order to gain the strength to change direction.
