Average treatment of a Chandler classic has surprises
Mitchum is always great but the femme isn't very fatale . The story's shift to England from L. A. was obviously done to save money and reeks of low budget . Some cardboard supporting performances spoil it further BUT - it's still a Chandler story and worth watching for the snappy dialogue and convoluted story . Nowhere near as good as the Bogart movie but if you have seen one then you have to see the other .Mitchum is always great but the femme isn't very fatale . The story's shift to England from L. Having recently watched the original Bogart/Bacall version of this film from Raymond Chandlers book I was at first taken aback to realise the action had been transported to England and to what was the present day when the film was made. However once I got over the initial surprise and settled down to watch the film it actually worked quite well. The story had not been messed with and the characterisations and plot lines were all in keeping with the original book. Robert Mitchum reprises his role from Farewell My Lovely and Oliver Reed does sinister like only he can. Charlotte Rampling is of course always watchable. The Big Sleep
Having first seen the Humphrey Bogart version first, I think I was quite spoiled. Yes, I've heard that this remake is closer to the book, but I can't shake the fact that I just prefer Bogart over Mitchum. And, being made in glorious black and white (which is perfect for Film Noir), I just couldn't get used to color for the film. Plus, at times, the two stories are nearly word-for-word identical--so watching this film became a real bore. It's a shame but I just couldn't accept this film because of these reasons. Instead, it's a shame the producers didn't just pick an entirely new Raymond Chandler story or that of some other mystery writer.
