This one-season TV series ran on the Science Fiction channel in 1999. Produced by the legendary Rodger Corman, the series is more or less in the style of "Max Headroom" and "Night Man", which also ran on that channel before it began spending lots of time on Professional Entertainment Wrasslin' and Plumbers moonlighting as Ghost Hunters. The special effects are about as good as it got before elaborate CGI was available. There are more than a few homages to the Batman TV series in the villians. Adam West and Frank Gorshin are worth watching as bad guys with complex histories and great gimmicks. Given that this was a Corman production, expect car chases, police cars flipping over like pancakes at a Masonic breakfast, and elaborate cunning plots by the baddies to hold the City of Angels hostage. The Black Scorpion costume is an amazing design. The actress seems to have legs that are longer than she is tall. The supporting characters are simply fun without quite crossing into parody. Unusual for any super hero series are the number of powerful women characters. Corman achieved almost a mirror image of the usual comic book style, where men are the primary players, whether as scientists, protagonists or experts in some field. Whoever is in charge of scripting at Warner/DC should look at this series to see how to build a world where women can take charge and level the superhero playing field. Darcy is no female Bruce Wayne--she isn't isolated from her city night job by billions of dollars and a remote mansion, her go-to team are reformed black street criminals who are genuinely fond of her, and this series creates a world more like an actual city with all of its warts. The closest comic series would have to be Eisners "The Spirit" which was as gritty and stark. The limitations of budget make combat scenes almost predictable, but the bantering is clever, and even the bad guys and gals are usually just looking for misguided empowerment after getting a raw deal. The series is on DVD, not Blu-Ray. To be honest, with an upscaling player you probably couldn't notice a difference if it had been available in HD. The audio is in Dolby 2.1 or 5.1, captioning is available, and Spanish language is an option. There are commentary tracks on the DVD. My one complaint might be the clever 6-fold DVD holder with its booklet. It is a little awkward, but at least you are unlikely to misplace a disc. In conclusion this is simply fun superheroine television, with Corman working his own brand of move magic at the top of his game. Maybe the CW would be interested in a re-boot?Read full review
