Great for the Basics
In most of my studies, I have learned that in order to be successful in business, I must have a fundamental knowledge of financial literacy. I had slim financial literacy, so I asked one of the SCORE (www.score.org) advisors to suggest a book that would give me the fundamentals I was seeking. The advisor suggested “Accounting and Financial Fundamentals for Non Financial Executives” by Robert Rachlin and Allen Sweeny. ISBN: 0-8144-7928-6 The book is generally easy to read. The authors pretty much assume that you don’t know much about the subject. Accounting and Finances, as the authors explain, are not fundamentally difficult to understand. The explanations, although thorough, are simple and understandable (most of them ;) ). There are many charts and graphs to aid the explanation, and if ... The book has 16 chapters, but I have divided it into 6 sections so can get a quick idea of what goes on. They are: The Basics – quick accounting theory + balance sheets + income statements Accounting Process – creating balance sheets and income statements from beginning to end Investment Analysis – many different methods to analyzing investments Ratios – many ratios to analyze, track, evaluate, and decide if changes are needed for your business/investments Cashflow – creating the cash flows statement Appendix – compound interest tables + future values tables The sections blend into each other pretty well. After reading this book, I am not an expert in accounting and finance, nor do I intend to be one, nor is this book intended to make you one. That I will leave to my business accountants. I do however need to understand the basics in order to understand my accountant’s results. I believe that it would be best to know a little bit about a lot of things instead of being an expert in just one thing. That’s whats gonna make me a good manager and whats gonna allow me to work “on” my business as opposed to “in” my business. So it’s established that I am not an expert. I am however much better equipped to tracking the success of my ventures than I was before. I most definitely recommend the book. Have a good one guys, Victor
