I bought this book after first reading a library copy. This first book in the set carefully sets the stage for an exciting second and a third story. The charactrs are carefully built. It begins a little slowly, but the action picks up mid-book. It is not a light read. There are a lot of parallels to American society today. It makes a statement about socialism, though it can be read for it's story at a lighter level. i would reccommend this book to lovers of high fantasy.
This is a fantasy novel, and the first of a trilogy. While it stands alone better than either of the sequals, it still has that unfinished feel you expect from the first in a trilogy. It has interesting characters, but is a bit slow to start, and the conception of "magic" in this series is a bit convoluted and left (at first) to the reader to decipher. Basically it is a nice piece of fantasy. Don't read it if you want something deep, complex, or are adverse to hearing alternate views on magic, demons, or fantasy creatures (like elves, unicorns, and dragons).

Great book. Lots of action and adventure and great details and descriptions on majical creatures. A very well told story.
This is a great book, lots of action adventure if you can read at least half the book. First part of the book is full of alot of information, but after that you will not be able to put the book down.
