Excellent BD-R writer.
As a BD-R writer, this product works very well. It replaced an ageing burner from 2010 and is noticeably faster. Be aware that you'll need to connect it via USB 3.0 (or 3.1) or via SATA to get the best performance from it. It cannot burn at full speed if it's connected via USB 2.0. While it does come with a CD with media viewing software, the software is restricted in its ability and requires a separate upgrade fee to unlock its more advanced features. If your needs are simple, you can search for freeware which will fill your media playback needs rather than using the provided software. Finally, this drive that can be modified (by overwriting its firmware) to read UHD discs (a "UHD friendly" drive) but that will void its warranty so take care if you do proceed to alter its firmware. The Blue-Ray burner/reader arrived well packaged, safe & sound in very fast time. After spending about 5 minutes it was fitted in my HP Workstation desktop computer. As I had previously installed VLC Media Player, I didn't need to load the disc that came with the Blue-Ray reader/writer to watch a movie. I watched a Blue-Ray disc, "The Greatest Beer Run Ever", that I purchased about 2 months prior to purchasing this player. It worked perfectly straight off the bat and I enjoyed a few Great Northern beers myself while watching. Great player & great movie. I'm 71 so I can relate to the times. Excellent value and an ultra reliable unit.
This LG BluRay drive is one of 3 that are in use in my house - two are in Desktop PC's and the third is in my HTPC. I've had the HTPC one the longest (<> 5 years) and it has performed faultlessly the whole time. However it's the one in the desktop PC at my workstation that gets the most work and has had 50 times as much use as the one in the HTPC - same story - never missed a beat. Installed in PC running Linux Mint so could not use supplied Cyberlink software and had to install some aacs and blu-ray libraries before it worked with VLC. This unit was from August 2019 and had firmware 1,04 in place so no good for UHD disks but fine for standard Blu-ray disks. Tested with VLC, Makemkv and Brasero (burning DVD) and all worked well. Played CD and DVDs fine as well. Nice and quiet.
