  • "Tribute" is a TKO.

    The album is comprised of a mere two tracks, but don't let that deter you from hearing what is easily a masterpiece. "Bitches Brew" may have signaled to the jazz world that there was no going back, but few could have expected Davis to push the envelope this far. "Tribute" is hardly a jazz album - this is primal acid rock with tinges of jazz, owing more than a bit to "Funhouse" by the Stooges, of whom Davis was a fan. But those who are game are in for a wild ride. The opening track "Right Off" literally takes off - veering from space rock, bluesy psychedelia, and barroom rock. Davis' presence on this track is minimal, but this allows John McLaughlin to improvise and in doing so the virtuoso guitarist emits some unrepentently raw, searing work that ranks as his best.
