These comics redefined the bronze age with the depth of plotting and the thoughtful storytelling that developed out of the Chris Claremont and John Byrne era. The Len Wein/Claremont/Dave Cockrum issues laid the groundwork for the Dark Phoenix saga that was as engagingly told as any story in comics has been since. Why they could not include the last three John Byrne issues (#141 & 142 Days of Future Past and the final issue #143) I cannot understand and is my only knock of the compilation. To get these issues, you need to buy a standalone graphic novel or slog through the B&W Essentials. Nevertheless, this is the Uncanny X-Men at their best!!
This edition chronicles the origin of what made kids and adults across the world fall in love with the X-Men. As a comic book it is revolutionary in being multi-racial and gender-fair. Black and White, Male and Female (and even alien) were all allowed to be human and heroic as members of the X-Men. This is comic genius at its finest.
