Dysfunctional is the 5th studio album (CD) from the '80's metal band Dokken. It is on the Columbia label, and hopes were held high for this album as a "comeback" after the band's '80's implosion. However, it does not achieve what was hoped for. All the classic elements are here. The tight harmonies, soaring guitar shredding from original guitarist, George Lynch, and the required "power" ballad are there, but things just don't "click". One thing one must get use to while listening, is the experimentation in the music. They, at points, vere off the course of traditional heavy metal, into the land of nu-metal. There also is a song where there is "rapping" in the background. Overall, this CD is not that bad but it's not that good either. This CD not in my top 5 Dokken works. The best description I can give is: if you are looking for another "Back for the Attack", this is not it. But if you are open minded and in the mood for a change of pace from a heavy metal band, you might like it. It can grow on you!Read full review
Having decided to make a comeback the band wished to deliver something new to the audience somehow trying to stick back to what is made the band famous in the 80es. More or less, the album achieves the result. First thing you have to know is that there's not a song on the album in the vein of "Burning Like A Flame" or "In My Dreams" lyrics-wise. Don said he got tired of being hard rock minstrel so love got in the way. Instead the album deals with political and personal issues people go through in their own lives. "Too High To Fly" is about a friend of Don, who died from drug overdose while "Hole In My Head" is about some sort of mental illness. Thus you can understand that it's senseless to expect a happy-go-lucky kind of sound taking into account such lyrics. You will hear dark, heavy, and aggressive guitar sounds still giving a way to melodies and passion thanks to Don's voice. Consider that Mr. Lynch wasn't that involved in the songwriting so it's more Don Dokken's solo album than a band effort. And a nice effort, you know.Read full review
