As a game, Shadow Hearts II is very effective at being what it aims to be: A standard RPG with elements that change it up just enough to not be too similar to its competition. Is it a good game? Yes, very. However, it's nothing special. Some rapid-fire pros and cons to make this a short review: Pros: It has a wonderful sense of humor with its cast of characters and plot. The battle system is very active and uses timing effectively despite maintaining classic turn-based style battling to make every fight stay engaging. The story continues a trilogy here, so if you're into lengthy adventure tales then this is definitely a pro. Cons: Leveling up is generic and bland where more levels equates to more health and damage. Standard stuff. You upgrade your gear by simply buying the slightly better attack weapon for a certain character in the new town you come across. Gear progression is as basic as it can possibly be. Items in the game are simple heal damage or restore mana with the resurrection items thrown in to boot. The spells are basic, if not worse in terms of actual usability (low mana pools, high cost) and the random encounters are fixed per area. (Same enemies in a particular zone, therefore no rare spawns, no diversity.) Overall, I'm enjoying it. It itches a weird JRPG crave that I have, and if you're just as weird as I am, it'll probably do the same for you.Read full review

Just liek the first Shadow Hearts- this one has a good story which is related with certain events in History-also the amount of things (abilities, equipment, magic) is very large Unlike the first game however, you can do a few more things in combat and on the field. Now you can have 4 active party members ina fight- the "ring" is still there however it can now be upgraded to hold up more attacks. for example- the main character can upgrade his ring to a level 5, meaning he can perfomr a five hit combo. SOmething else new to the combat is the ability to combine your combo with another character - you can link up all 4 character to perform a combo attack. you cna choose which action to perform (magic/attack.ability) The game is not as dark as the first one however the humor has become a bit more mature.-the graphics and battle system has been improved greatly. On the field you can sort your party any way you want. and unlike many RPG's of the time- you don't need to have the main character fight in the party- you can form a party without him. If you have played the first game -then you'll be happy with the continuation of the story. If thisis your first shadow hearts game then you may be a bit lost in part of the story since it makes a number of references to the first game. For somewone who played the first game -you'll see A LOT of improvements,if this is your introduction to the series, the story will still enlace you anf the gameplay will keep you entertained for hours.Read full review
This game has the most unique and strange cast of characters I've ever met; a vampire wrestler who uses random objects (such as a tuna) for weapons pretty much says it all. Even enemies are weird- can you say "toy duck"? The storyline is like having a history class...mixed with science fiction and comedy. The turn based system is refreshed by using the Judgment Ring- a ring with a spinner in which you must hit the colored sections when performing attacks. Abilities are upgraded through different methods, such as solving a puzzle board or collecting musical pieces. Graphics, sound, and voice acting are not too shabby. If you are looking for an RPG that has lovable characters and plenty of humor while staying serious, then this game is right up your alley.
