I was fascinated with Shelby Foote and his perspective on the civil war when I was glued to the Ken Burns series on tv many years ago. From time to time I purchased books on Amazon for my Kindle and saw the three volume series for sale on eBay at a really good price. Each volume is around 800 pages and I have almost finished volume 1. I can’t stop reading! This is the best and while Shelby Foote is from the south, there is no southern bias here and I highly recommend The Civil War A Narrative

I've just finished the first volume and enjoying the journey. I follow a lot of Civil War history but had avoided this because I'd heard he had a southern bias. I'm not seeing this. We doesn't romanticize at all but has compassion for both sides. He doesn't diminish the role of slavery in it at all like I've encountered in southern apologists. The detail is great and he provides lots of small maps to keep track of the action. I'm in awe of this work and the set the sellers provided will look great in my bookcase.
This is my second reading of the series. My first was over twenty years ago. The writing is exceptionalities and the insights and facts align well with other books I have read. Shelby Foote was outstanding in all respects. He puts the reader in the history

Shelby Foote's Civil War 3 volume set is outstanding. If you want to dive into the granular structure of the defining event of this country this will satisfy your craving. It is detailed, long, and granular. You will fully get the feel of generals, Lincoln, politions, and the true feel of just how hard and long this conflict was. It is long but worth detail if you are looking for detail.
It’s the best civil war set I’ve ever read and I’m not even halfway through the first volume
