The Canon HF R500. The BEST quality, in regular and LOW light situations camcorder at the sub $300 mark. Hands down. The bad first: 1) Battery Life. Absolutely terrible. Buy the extended battery, and buy 2. The regular battery will give you a little over an hour. Extended 2-3 Hours. It's really an issue, you will want to carry several batteries. 2) No Wifi. Not a big deal, not needed for data transfer etc.. but as you get to this level of Lens, body, etc.. The other models in this series have WIFI, which allows remote control function via smart phone, etc. Not a deal breaker for many, but it's seriously handy. My biggest regret about this camera is the lack of WIfi, or even ability to buy an add-on to , well, add Wifi. 3) Fragile View screen/touch screen. You need to be gentle with this screen.. really gently. The connection between it and the main camera doesn't handle much abuse. My first one had issues within 30 days. It would stop shutting off, LED screen would have lines going across it (making what you were recording unwatchable, etc..). I got another, and now know that I have to absolutely baby it. This screen wants to slam shut.. don't let it. 4) Imagine stabilization -- It's not BAD, but not great. Digital stabilization is never awesome, but if you plan on mounting this on a vehicle or similar situation.. with it zoomed in a bit.. It will not be smooth. Ok.. the Good. 1) Best lens in the price range.. You need to move to a $500+ Camera body to beat this image quality. 2) Low light performance is similar to the $550+ camera lines.. larger Lens, better CMOS than all the other brands. 3) Has Mic Out port! Very very nice. Most in this price range do NOT have this option. So a wired or wireless external mic can be attached. A+ 4) Headphone jack (I don't use it much, but we all have our uses, I'm sure it is a must have for some.. not on most models that are $299 or less.) 5) Touch screen -- Very good.. Nice feel, works perfect,. 6) On camera features/options -- Great selection. Not over complicated, but plenty of key features to shoot or edit ON camera. 7) Facial recognition 8) Long 1080p record time with a 64GB card (or larger).. With a 64GB SD card at 30Mbps MP4 you get a solid 8-10 hours. You CAN reduce that quality and choose between multi formats. I prefer MP4 due to web compatibility. Bottom line here.. you are buying this Camera for it's Body, it's lens, it's internals. It's a $550+ image quality without some of the "extras". If you can put up with poor battery life,.. then you'll live. It does have a port for DC charging, but through a proprietary odd USB to (W) shaped input. No other camera in this price range will match the image quality here. It has a shoe horn for light attachment, etc.. While it's also a great camera to point and shoot without any thought for additions. If you buy, grab at LEAST one extended battery, and the WALL charger. Even with the Wall charger , charging batteries takes half a day (12 hours or more). Very slow charge pace. Another reason to have multiple batteries, you never want to wait on a battery to charge.. this is no 30min to an hour charge time. I recommend this camera highly.Read full review
I bought this to make youtube videos in my machine shop where it may likely end up destroyed. For the price, I'm not terribly worried should that occur. Image quality is great at 1080x60fps--better than most youtube videos I've seen of similar genera. Battery life is reasonable at over an hour of continuous shooting and the convenience of SD card makes it an ideal camera for pre-production videos. It has an external audio input that works great with my lavalier mic. though I usually record audio and video separately and splice them together in post production. The mic jack does NOT provide plug-in power for electret mics so be sure your mic has its own power supply.

Pros- The camcorder features in HD as well as containing external audio plug in. It's lightweight and after you get the feel for the settings it's rather easy to use, make sure that you format your SD card once you install it into the device and you shouldn't have any issue with recording onto the card itself. Cons - (If any) The device does take awhile to charge though which could be a drag, so possible buy an extra battery with an external charger. The camcorder doesn't record in mirror image, although the feature is in the settings it is only for looks, by that I mean it shows in mirror image while recording but once you have recorded it doesn't render to mirror image. Conclusion - It is a really good camcorder and would recommend it to others, the quality is just as you see it in reality.Read full review

This item was listed as untested but works well in nearly all respects. The lens coating has spots but for non-professional work it is fine. The price was well less than half of a tested camera and performs at about the 95% level. Shipping was fast and packing very suitable.
