Great book for anyone who wants to understand the Middle East
This book fills a huge gap in historical writing, providing a history of the world from the Muslim East perspective, from the birth of Mohammed through the modern age. The writing is engaging, the author has a good sense of humor, and presents the historical narrative in a relatable, interesting, and exciting style. It presents a whole new area of history that is not normally covered in history classes in the US. Having read this, I understand all the various factions that I heard about growing up to the present times. Hamas, the PLO, the Taliban, and the different styles of Islam as practiced in different countries. Why Saudi Arabia has a more repressive regime especially in terms of women's rights than many other Islamic countries, how Persia became Iran, and a whole lot more about the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. Why technologies that developed in the West didn't take hold in the East, based on the idea that different cultures simply have different technological requirements.
