Synopsis
The only god living in Green Town, Illinois, that Douglas Spaulding knew of. The facts about John Huff, aged twelve, are simple and soon stated. He could pathfind more trails than any Choctaw or Cherokee since time began. Could leap from the sky like a chimpanzee from a vine. Could live underwater two minutes and slide fifty yards downstream. Could hit baseballs into apple trees, knocking down harvests. Could jump six-foot orchard walls. Ran laughing. Sat easy. Was not a bully. Was kind. Knew the words to all the cowboy songs and would teach you if you asked. Knew the names of all the wild flowers and when the moon would rise or set and when the tides came in or out. He was, in fact, the only god living in the whole of Green Town, Illinois, during the twentieth century that Douglas Spaulding knew of., The summer of '28 was a vintage season for a growing boy. A summer of green apple trees, mowed lawns, and new sneakers. Of half-burnt firecrackers, of gathering dandelions, of Grandma's belly-busting dinner. It was a summer of sorrows and marvels and gold-fuzzed bees. A magical, timeless summer in the life of a twelve-year-old boy named Douglas Spaulding--remembered forever by the incomparable Ray Bradbury. The best of all Bradbury's works.

This is a masterpiece written by Ray Bradbury. I have read all his works, but this one is nothing less than a masterpiece. It is so compelling that I have re-read it with great pleasure at least once a year since I was sixteen years old. There is nuance that grips the reader and makes them think and remember. There are happenings that seize the reader and make the breath a bit faster in the reading. One tends to exchange opinions and thoughts with fellow readers and what they gleaned fro the work and what they thought was meant by some of the passages. A twelve year old boy and the summer of his life. Sounds simple but this book is alive with meaning.

  • Lightweight, glossy cover, crisp pages, and GREAT AUTHOR!

I received this book in excellent condition. I love Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, and this was just as good, if not better. Defiantly recommend this book!

  • it is a bit more used/old than expected, but intact and easily readable so I’m OK with it for the price.

  • nostalgic and delightful

Love this story of long ago. Makes me think of my own childhood. Although, this story is set much earlier than my childhood, it somehow conjures up childhood memories. It is an annual reread for me. Love the writing of Ray Bradbury.

By far one of the best books I have ever read! It brought back such good memories about my childhood, such as the feeling I had when I got a new pair of tennis shoes. If you haven't read it, get it; Please! You won't be disappointed! GET THIS BOOK!
