As with everything this has way more plastic than my 30 yo Baby Lock machine did but quality of stitches is superior by far. The thread guide "tree" that lifts up from the spools is the most fragile plastic part but should be fine if one is careful to push it down after use. Machine is quite heavy and has suction feet so it won't move across the table when sewing. Machine is large so make sure you read dimensions and have room for it. I successfully threaded it on the second try. Just go slow and double check everything before trying to sew. Diagrams are clear. I found both of the loopers most difficult to get right. One disadvantage is you have to rethread the whole machine if you make a threading mistake on 1 or more of the paths. If you try to shortcut this instruction and just rethread the "error", it doesn't work because your rethread messes up what's there. Brother doesn't advertise this because it's a pain and takes time, especially if you are using 4 threads! Also I recommend using serger cone threads as it feeds off of spools smoothly. Gets pricey if you 4 thread serge a lot. Wawak Sewing Supplies online has great prices on serger cones. Haven't used the 3 thread yet but should be fine. Wish it could do a 2 thread overlock as some of my utility sewing requires only minimal finishing. This serger would do a better/quicker job than a sewing machine. Manual is good and DVD is fine to give you confidence to get started. Once you thread it correctly and see the paths you should be fine. Don't feel intimidated at first, once you get it right and start sewing, you'll be so excited you'll want to overlock everything! Overall great machine.Read full review

I've used 4 different Brand Names in sergers in my 50 years of sewing. I take this model overall, It's just simpler to use, other good name models just get too busy using and preparing to use the serger. Get too complicated, too much information on how to use the serger. Just carefully read all information, don't make it complicated. After all it's just a machine and your in control. Once you get going you'll wonder how you ever got along with out it. I've witnessed a 100 times through the years.

I have a 1034 serger and was disappointed in the quality of the stitches. My daughter-in-law has the 3034 and I used it and was so happy with it I ordered this one. It is a much better machine.
