If you can find a complete iBook G3 for under $50 (shipped) that works, consider it a bargain (as of October 2012). They are compact, sturdy laptops that work nicely for doing schoolwork, checking emails and doing some light web browsing - but don't expect much out of Youtube or Vimeo. These are ten year old laptops by now, so don't be surprised if the battery needs to be replaced. It can play games from its era (Diablo II, Unreal Tournament, Quake III, The Sims) fairly well, thanks to Apple building in ATI graphics instead of the cheaper alternatives of its day. The G3 processor is fairly slow by today's standards, but for basic tasks like email and schoolwork, having a fast processor isn't really important. As others have said, you'll want to have Mac OS X 10.4.11 and the maximum amount of RAM (640MB) installed to get any real use out of it in the modern era. Upgrading the RAM is fairly easy - just lift out the keyboard and undo a few small screws to access the memory slot. And here's a special hint for those of you who get a 600mhz or faster iBook G3 - find a program called "iCooked". It will allow you to increase the processor speed of your iBook G3 with just a few clicks. I once owned a 700mhz G3 that was able to be boosted up to 900mhz in this way. This doesn't work with any of the iBooks that have ATI Rage graphics - only the Radeon equipped models work. Be careful with this program, though! Setting the speed up too high may cause the laptop to freeze. To conclude, if you don't have a lot of money to spend and want a taste of the Mac experience, or just need something to hammer out some emails and Word documents, an iBook G3 could be just the thing. Again, I wouldn't pay more than $50 unless it has extras, like a second battery or an Airport wifi card. Not much above $50 you'll start to see a few iBook G4s, which are significantly faster.Read full review
I like this laptop alot i only paid 58 bucks for it, also included the airport card which is awesome since this computer cannot have wireless internet without it. the screen is bright and the disk tray works perfectly. Also the battery i recieved with my apple ibook g3 holds a charge like it was brand new, the keyboard works flawlessly, doesn't wiggle or anything and the screen lock work great. the only thing negative i have to say is the person whom i bought it from did not send a charger, which in retrospect was my fault for assuming it came with one, and still the charger only cost me $27.01 so having said that paying only 85.01 for a great laptop instead of buying a way too expensive laptop at a retailer saved me a fortune. so if your thinking about buying a apple ibook g3 i would say do it.Read full review
I was looking for a laptop that I could get email, facebook and chat on. Didn't care about features. The price was really good. I am disappointed that the battery doesn't seem to last as long as I think it should, but I just plug it in when I want to use it. It is not as fast as my iMac, but easier to move around.
I seek laptop donations and sometimes buy to try to fix in my mechanical not geek mind and then give them to others who have none. The Apple i Book is a dependable machine with reasonable parts and whole units available on Ebay. The iBook seems to be as fast as a new Toshiba laptop I just purchased for myself. I like the way Apple updates all your software without the hassle.
Mike was amazing and would recommend his company and product to anyone. Excellent service . If I could give him more stars I would.
