About this product

Product Information

Jupiter's Travels -Ted Simon's astonishing 4 year motorbike journey around the world The book that inspired Ewan McGregor's Long Way Round In the late 1970s Ted Simon set off on a Triumph and rode 63,000 miles over four years through fifty-four countries in a journey that took him around the world. Through breakdowns, prison, war, revolutions, disasters and a Californian commune, he travelled into the depths of fear and reached the heights of euphoria. He met astonishing people and was treated as a spy, a welcome stranger and even a god. For Simon the trip became a journey into his own soul, and for many others - including bikers Charley Boorman and Ewan McGrergor - it provides an inspiration they will never forget. This classic text, which has informed a whole genre of travel writing in the thirty years since it was first published, will never be bettered for sheer adventure, passion, humour and honesty. Brought up in England by a German mother and a Romanian father, Ted Simon found himself impelled by an insatiable desire to explore the world. It led him to abandon an early scientific career in favour of journalism, and he has worked for several newspapers and magazines on Fleet Street and elsewhere. Ted Simon is also the author of Riding Home and The Gypsy in Me.

A right rip rorting read about a four year long bike ride

During the lock in and workers take over of the Triumph motorcycle factory in the 1970s journalist Ted Simon set out to test a Triumph motorbike by riding it around the World. It is a great story (and its true) weather you are a biker or not.

  • An amazing precedent for those that followed

It's only 43 years since Ted Simon completed his trip around the world but this excellent description shows just how much the world has changed It's an important piece of modern history

  • When Ewan were still in nappies, the long way round meets real life!

At times gritty and honest, Ted Simon reveals the realism behind the dream so many share, to pack up their bike, put the sun to their back and just keep on riding. With no support teams or film crews and a meager budget, Ted scrapes by through the kindness of strangers but finds that so many of them have their own agendas. This engaging tale serves as both a warning to dreamers and a heads up for those of a more determined mind. Well worth the effort.

  • The Original

Jupiter's Travels has been the inspiration for many to do similar world trips. I read this almost 40 years ago, as a bike mad teenager, and loved every page. I guess you need to be in the same mindset as Ted Simon to fully appreciate it all but there's a new generation of bikers out there who have never had the pleasure. I urge them to read this to fully grasp what the passion entails for many of their peers. No mobile phones or social media back then. Electronic ignition was in it's infancy. Just a man and his air-cooled bike battling the elements with a long, long walk for help when it goes wrong. As much as I loved Long Way Round, Boorman and McGregor had top of the range BMW's and support crew and spares, so it kind of missed the mark compared to Ted's adventure. It's getting a ...
