The Best Fawcett Biography So Far
Colonel Percy Fawcett, with his son Jack and a friend, disappeared somewhere in Brazil in 1925. There is agreement on that, if on little else. He was reportedly in search of a lost city, possibly the fabled Eldorado of the Conquistadores, of whose existence he had convinced himself and a number of other people. Since 1928 numerous expeditions have set out; either to rescue Fawcett, who may have been being held as a prisoner by Amerindians, or, failing that, to discover his mortal remains and ascertain what had happened to him. None has been successful. Up to 100 people may have perished in the course of this search. This book helpfully reviews Fawcett's life-story, his various expeditions and the expeditions that sought him. No firm conclusion can now be reached, but it seems likely that ... Nevertheless... there were persistent reports of an old white man being held captive by Indians. One such report, by a Swiss adventurer, Monsieur Rattin, seemed very convincing, although the old man in question might have been someone other than Fawcett. Rattin led a further expedition with the aim of rescuing the old man; he too disappeared and his fate remains unknown. The book clears up some uncertainties but come to no definite conclusion. We shall probably never know the answer. It is of interest that Fawcett never dismissed South American Indians as ignorant savages; he believed that they were capable of evolving an advanced civilization; had done so in the past and in other places than just Mexico and Peru. There remains the tantalising possibility that more interesting sites comparable to Machu Picchu may yet be discovered, although odd rocky features in the jungle can look misleadingly like ruins.
