About this product

Product Information

A Time of Gifts and Between the Woods and the Water were the first two volumes in a projected trilogy that would describe the walk that Patrick Leigh Fermor undertook at the age of eighteen from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. 'When are you going to finish Vol. III' was the cry from his fans; but although he wished he could, the words refused to come. The curious thing was that he had not only written an early draft of the last part of the walk, but that it predated the other two. It remains unfinished but The Broken Road completes an extraordinary journey.

  • Good value used book in good condition by one of the great travel writers.

A very good quality used book at a very keen price. The author is one of the best travel writers and this book is one of a trilogy covering a journey he made in his youth.

  • Essential reading to everyone with a passion for slow travel through Europe

Possibly a review of the 3rd book of a trilogy is never necessary. This was disappointing following the middle book of the infamous three. But then, from what I can gather, not all of "the Broken Road" benefits from Fermor's comprehensive, first hand attentions. It is not without it's very special highlights. I too (as reminded in Radio 4's John Humphreys report 22.06.2015) was spellbound as I read Fermor's description of the last stork of the migratory flock as it too approached and passed over Fermor and a shepherd in a mountain pass. I recall with special delight his journey south along the Black Sea coast and especially one night of timely shelter and excess in the sea cave. Of course this book in the trilogy has to be an essential read for anyone with a passion for slow travel through ...
