Humphrey Bogart gives an outstanding performance as factory laborer Frank Taylor, who loses a promotion to a foreign-born coworker. Filled with hatred, Taylor joins the Black Legion, a secret white supremacist organization. The group burns down the barn of Taylor's coworker, scaring him out of town. Thus, Taylor receives the promotion. But when Taylor is forced to spend his time recruiting new members for the Legion, he is demoted from plant foreman back to factory laborer. The Legion attacks Taylor's new boss, making friends suspect Taylor's involvement, while Taylor himself begins drinking heavily in a fit of self-loathing. When Taylor finally loses his job and the Legion gears up for an attack on a former friend, it appears that Taylor has hit rock bottom--with only himself to blame. This fast-paced, black and white tale of moral decay and redemption is based on the true story of the Black Legion's condemnable actions in Michigan in the 1930s.

    Excellent Film for Bogie Fans

    Black Legion (1937) is a very good film starring Humphrey Bogart. If you're a fan of Bogie, you will definitely enjoy this movie, because Bogart gives a great performance and he's the star of the film. Bogart is fascinating as an average Joe who loses out on a sure-thing promotion to a foreign-born man. He joins the Black Legion, a secret society which uses violence to defend white American jobs and families, but then he gets involved too deeply and must face the consequences.

    Awesome story and well worth the view.

    Bogart at his best, and filmed during his prime film career (in my opinion). A plausible story set with working class family and friends, Bogart plays a man who is overlooked as an obvious choice for a management position in a factory by a hard working immigrant. Bogie decides to join a legion of workers which is determined to do away with immigrants (legion and immigrants being a metaphor for KKK and African Americans). What happens is sad and perhaps somewhat predictable, but tells a story and teaches a lesson. Excellent!
