Jim Balog has several photo books, this is my favorite!
James Balog, recognized and praised world-wide for his insightful portraits of the rarest species of wildlife on earth made his first knock-out showing with images from his SURVIVORS series. Focusing on threatened, endangered, and near-extinct species of wildlife from all over the world, Balog has gone beyond the oft-expected National Geographic "cameraman in a duck-blind' approach and has featured his subjects against backgrounds and settings that range from a pure white background to set off the textures and expressions of his primates while placing a tiger in an unfinished cement-floored building with wooden joists overhead to symbolize man's encroachment on the tigers homelands. A Giant Panda sits in the great round hall of a theater in Shanghai, far from his native bamboo forests ... While the images are both enchanting and provocative there is also a collection of commentaries relating to his experiences with certain animals ( Inter-species communication is not a thing of fairy tales or comic book heroes - As someone who had the privilege to work with the Ohio State Chimpanzee project I can attest to the complex ideas that can be shared without a word of English being used )as well as the state of their survival efforts and their estimated population in the wild. Some of these species will never be seen by most of us except in the pages of a book like this. It is Balog's message that these species are citizens of Planet Earth and play a vital role in the balance of nature as well as a role in how humans should recognize that we were placed in the Garden of Eden , not as overlords whose job was to destroy Paradise, but that we are here as caretakers called to watch over these masterpieces of God's most artistic genius and to tend the Garden and maintain the Paradise where all life was in harmonious balance and where SURVIVAL wasn't even a concern. I bought 4 of the original photographs found in this book and they have such clarity, intensity, and empathy that, even after 14 years I still stop in my library and marvel at how sharp the detail is and what nobility the animals project. You MUST add this to your library, if for no other reason than the fact that these species may not be around for your children or grandchildren to ever see outside of a museum display. His self-titled website has images from his other books and I am sure you will agree that he has the gift of waiting( sometimes for hours) for that perfect moment to snap the shutter and capture brilliance to share with the rest of us.. Thank you for a great collection of images that reveal the senscience of the many Citizens of Earth.
