Additional information
Personnel: Jon Boden (vocals, fiddle); Benji Kirkpatrick (guitar, bouzouki, mandolin); Rachael Mcshane (fiddle, cello); Sam Sweeney (fiddle, pipes); Paul Sartin (fiddle, oboe); John Spiers (concertina, melodeon); Brendan Kelly (bass clarinet, saxophone); Andy Mellon (trumpet); Justin Thurgur (trombone); Ed Neuhauser (tuba); Pete Flood (percussion). Audio Mixer: John Leckie. Recording information: Abbey Road Studios, London. Photographer: David Angel . Arguably the most rock & roll outfit on the contemporary folk scene, 11-piece collective Bellowhead's knack of blending punk, funk, jazz, and cabaret with centuries-old ballads and sea shanties couldn't be more removed from the winsome fare of the in vogue no-folk brigade. Produced by John Leckie (Radiohead, Stone Roses), their third album, Hedonism, continues to blur the boundaries on 11 imaginative reworkings of traditional standards which prove that British folk can be as exhilarating as it can be melancholic. Opener "New York Girls" sets the tone immediately with its array of jaunty fiddles and frenzied percussion providing a suitably upbeat backdrop for Jon Boden's antiquated pirate-esque tones, and is followed by possibly their greatest interpretation to date, "A-Begging I Will Go," whose funky guitar licks and Stax horns turns the 17th century classic into something that could have been the theme tune to a Blaxploitation film. Elsewhere, "Yarmouth Town" is given a breathless jazz club workout; the instrumental "Cross-Eyed and Chinless" cleverly drifts from accordion-led Morris dance to seductive tango; while the mournful child ballad, "Cold Blows the Wind" is virtually unrecognizable as a brass-led vaudeville show stopper. The radical transformations don't always come off quite so effortlessly, particularly "Little Sally Racket," a chaotic and discordant fusion of manic surf rock riffs, anarchic vocals, and frantic punk rhythms. But while the sinister waltz of Jacques Brel's "Amsterdam," the haunting Scottish balladry of "Captain Wedderburn," and the slow-burning cinematics of "Broomfield Hill" show the band can enthrall even when they slow down the pace, Hedonism is at its most triumphant when it lives up to its name. ~ Jon O'Brien
Reviews
Uncut (p.83) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Little Sally Rackets' sounds like Madness invading your local folk club. Their best yet, by several splendidly raucous miles." Mojo (Publisher) (p.99) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]heir instinct for a colourfully cinematic framework is magnificently served on the disquieting ballads 'Broomfield Hill' and 'Cold Blows The Wind'..."

Fantastic seller! My item took longer than normal to arrive but that's due to them sending me the wrong dvd. Not to worry though, I contacted them and they arranged for the correct dvd to be sent out. My item has now arrived and the dvd was in excellent condition (brand new as described) and it was very well packaged. I would also like to say that the value for money is excellent. I highly recommend this seller, thank you so much! The issue with the wrong dvd was quickly rectified .

No communication needed with seller, so don't know what to rate with regards to communication (please dont take lack of feedback on this matter as a negative). Thanks again.

This vinyl is really reasonably priced and I love that it is one of the more unusual colours. It arrived well packaged, undamaged and looks as described. It arrived late, due to Royal Mail's Festive rush, but was dispatched by the seller really quickly. When I contacted them to ask where it was, they replied really quickly with a helpful solution. Such good customer service, so strongly recommend. Really happy with my purchase.
